WVU Wrestling Rises to No. 17, Numerous Mountaineers Listed in First NCAA Coaches Poll Ranking

Following the WVU wrestling team’s blowout victory over Morgan State this past Sunday that ended a two-match losing streak, the Mountaineers rose three spots to No. 17 in the latest edition of the NWCA Coaches Poll rankings.

Now sitting with a record of 9-3 through 12 matches, West Virginia is ranked above the 20-spot for the first time since sitting at No. 19 during Week two of the 2016 season.

The Mountaineers last reached the No. 17 ranking in 2004, and reached as high as No. 16 in 2005.

Additionally, eight of the 10 starters in the West Virginia lineup appeared in the Top 33 of their respective weight classes in the first edition of the NCAA Coaches Rankings leading up to the 2024 national tournament.

The Mountaineers are topped by true freshman Ty Watters clocking in at No. 7 in the 149-pound weight class. Jordan Titus, who has just one loss this season, is No. 10 at 141. Former All-American Peyton Hall is No. 9 at 165. Brody Conley sits at No. 15 at 174.

West Virginia is set to be back on the mat this weekend for a its final road trip of the season. The Mountaineers will face No. 4 ranked Iowa State on Friday night before visiting No. 18 Northern Iowa on Sunday afternoon.

Friday’s match can be streamed live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, while FloWrestling will be broadcasting Sunday’s dual meet.
