WVU Wrestling’s Brody Conley Finishes Third at Midlands Championships

West Virginia saw some unexpected results from the final day of the Midlands Championships in Hoffman Estates, Ill. on Friday.

There were surprises with those that finished higher than expected and others that didn’t live up to expectations.

125 Pound Weight Class 

No. 3 fifth-year senior Killian Cardinale made it to the semifinals on Thursday, but did not wrestle on Friday. He medically forfeited his Semifinal match and two consolation matches. Cardinale, even without wrestling, still finished in Sixth Place at Midlands.

149 Pound Weight Class

No. 5 junior Sam Hillegas (12-5) lost to No. 9 Lehigh sophomore Max Brignola in a 6-4 decision in their Consolation bout.

165 Pound Weight Class 

No. 3 junior Peyton Hall joined Cardinale in not wrestling at all on Friday. He medically forfeited his Consolation bout with No. 10 Rhode Island senior Nathan Lackman.

174 Pound Weight Class 

First-year Brody Conley (15-1) wrestled unattached at the Midlands and started in the Consolation Rounds on Friday. He defeated Wisconsin redshirt junior Jim Otto in a 5-1 decision, won a 4-2 decision over Illinois junior Trey Sizemore and then won a major decision, 12-0, over No. 5 Central Michigan redshirt junior Alex Cramer.

He earned a close, 3-1 decision over unattached Navy Prep Daniel Wask to win the Third Place match. Conley is the fourth player in WVU history to finish in third place at the Midlands Championships.

Conley finished with a 7-1 record at the Midlands, winning six straight Consolation matches to earn Third Place.

Senior Scott Joll (8-6) lost to rival Pitt first-year Luca Augustine in a major decision, 13-1, in his Consolation Bout.

184 Pound Weight Class 

No. 3 redshirt junior Anthony Carman (12-6) lost to rival Pitt redshirt junior Reece Heller in the Semifinals, as Heller pinned Carman at the 4:46 mark.

Carman then suffered a 7-5 sudden victory to No. 4 Virginia graduate Neil Antrassian and then No. 10 Illinois redshirt first-year Dylan Connell pinned him at the 0:30 mark in the Fifth Place match.

He joins Cardinale and Conley as the three Mountaineers to place at Midlands.

197 Pound Weight Class

No. 5 redshirt sophomore Austin Cooley, who suffered an injured Thursday against No. Pitt 4 first-year Mac Stout, medically forfeited his matchup vs. SIU Edwardsville senior Ryan Yarnell in the Consolation Rounds on Friday.

Heavyweight Class

No. 8 redshirt junior Michael Wolfgram (11-6) lost a close, 4-3 decision to No. 3 Harvard senior Yaraslau Slavikouski in the Consolation Rounds.

The Mountaineers finished in 12th place with 49.0 points at the Midlands Championships.

West Virginia wrestles again in their next duel match vs. Ohio on Friday, Jan. 6 at 8 p.m. in the WVU Coliseum.
