WVU’s Jordan Titus Named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week; Mountaineers Now Ranked No. 24

WVU Wrestling Jordan Titus

Tuesday has proved to be a big day for the West Virginia Wrestling program.

Following a pair stellar performances on the mat in West Virginia’s two previous matches, Mountaineers redshirt freshman Jordan Titus was announced as the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.

This came ahead of the Mountaineers being ranked as the No. 24 team in the country in the latest AWCA Division-I Coaches Poll following two key wins over Ohio and No. 21 Pittsburgh.

Titus picked up a win in both of the matches, sparking a run of victories that helped lead the Mountaineers to a 28-9 win over the Bobcats on Friday and defeat the Panthers 24-11 on Sunday. Titus beat Ohio’s Aidan Waszak by a 14-2 major decision before edging Pittsburgh’s Cole Matthews 3-1.

Matthews, who entered the match undefeated with 10 consecutive wins and was ranked No. 1 at 141 pounds, battled Titus to a 1-all tie in the third period. Titus then caught Matthews with a duck-under takedown to take the lead with 17 seconds remaining.

Titus matches Colin Johnston as the only Mountaineers to garner the award at 141 pounds. Johnston accomplished the feat in 2014 and was the first wrestler to win the award for West Virginia after the school joined the Big 12 the previous year. Titus is the 14th Mountaineer to be named Wrestler of the Week and the first since Noah Adams did it twice in 2020.

West Virginia’s two victories resulted in the Mountaineers entering the NWCA Top 25 for the first time since the Jan. 12 week of the 2015-16 season, when the squad reached as high as No. 19 in the rankings.

West Virginia’s victory over No. 21 Pittsburgh was the Mountaineers’ first triumph over a ranked team in nearly two years. The Mountaineers defeated then-No. 17 Northern Colorado 25-11 on Jan. 31, 2021.

The Mountaineers are now 6-1, marking the team’s best record through seven matches since 1990, when the Mountaineers started 7-0 en route to finishing 14-1.

WVU Wrestlers Riding Momentum for Upcoming Road Trip

West Virginia is in the midst of a four-match road stretch, with the next contest for the Mountaineers being Friday at Chattanooga before facing Oklahoma on Jan. 20 and Oklahoma State on Jan. 22.
