2023 Recruit Jordan Mayer Loves How WVU Football Doesn’t ‘Sugar Coat’

Over the weekend, 2023 prospect Jordan Mayer visited West Virginia football, receiving an offer from head coach Neal Brown and his staff.

Mayer is a multi-position athlete from Thomas Jefferson High School in Clairton, PA, playing tight end and defensive end. Standing in at 6-foot-5, weighing 235 pounds, Mayer has received notable offers from Boston College, Bowling Green, Duke, Duquesne and West Virginia. According to Rivals, this was Mayer’s third school visit, also visiting Boston College and Penn State. The 3-star recruit spoke with WV Sports Now about his experience visiting the football program.

“This experience at WVU was crazy,” he said. “The facilities were insane and the views were jaw dropping!”

Honesty for these kids goes a long way. Brown and his coaching staff have built a culture that revolves around telling it how it is. It may be difficult for some high school recruits to understand, but Mayer actually loves it.

“What sets them apart from some of the other schools is that they’re just real with me, they didn’t sugar coat things,” Mayer said.

On Saturday, Mayer received an offer from West Virginia. Most of us can’t relate to receiving a Division-I offer to play a sport, let alone a Power-5 offer. It’s hard to think what the emotions would be, but Mayer explains it well for us.

“The emotions were crazy, I was so excited to hear that,” Mayer said. “You just think back to why you started and for me starting at such a young age it’s always been a dream to go big so right now. I’m just tunnel vision!”

When you watch Mayer’s highlights, the first thing you’ll notice is how strong and agile the junior in high school is. Mayer is able to swim around linemen and catch up to anyone with the ball.

For Mayer, he’s not looking to become the next anybody, he’s trying to be Jordan Mayer.

“To be honest I don’t like comparing my self to other people even if they’re in the league,” Mayer said. “I try to focus on myself and what I need to do to get better, and try to reach the never ending accomplishments and be the best football player I can be.”

As Mayer continues his recruitment process with more scholarship offers and school visits, one thing he can take away from his trip to Morgantown is the great facilities the staff have surrounded themselves with and the honesty that the staff brings.
