The West Virginia Mountaineers face the Central Florida Golden Knights in the second round of the Advocare Invitational Tournament.  The Mountaineers knocked off Marist and UCF beat Nebraska to setup the first ever meeting between the two programs.

UCF is 4-0 on the season, with wins over Mercer, Gardner-Webb, William and Mary, and Nebraska.

Central Florida is without their leading scorer BJ Taylor from a year ago, due to a foot injury suffered in the season opener against Mercer.

They do bring back the tallest player in the NCAA Tacko Fall (7-6 295-lbs).  He had 94 blocked shots last year and help lead the Golden Knights to the best defensive field goal percentage in the nation at 36.5%.

Fall missed the first two games of the year because of a hip injury.  He made his 2017 season debut last Saturday against William & Mary, scoring 13 points on 5 of 5 shooting, 3-4 from the free throw line, 7 rebounds and 1 block in 15 minutes.  He had a solid night against Nebraska with 11 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks.

Guard Ceasar Dejusus leads the team in scoring (12.5) and led the nights in scoring, in the win over the Cornhuskers with 15 points.

Forward AJ Davis (6’9” 215-lbs) is second on the team in scoring (12.0) and he is a versatile big man, that can step out and play guard.  With his height and ball handling, it should help them be able to break the West Virginia style of press.

Guards Terrell (6.7 ppg) Allen and Chance McSpadden (11.0 ppg) round out the starting five, then guard Dayon Griffin (10.5 ppg) comes off the bench to a provide a spark.

This is a tough matchup for the Mountaineers.  Their length will be a problem underneath.  The last team West Virginia played with this type of size and athleticism was Texas A&M.

West Virginia will have to shoot better in this game if they want to win and/or they must do a phenomenal job rebounding against the bigger team.  It will take a group effort to outrebound Central Florida.

The Mountaineers will need to be aggressive and strong towards the rim.  They cannot be afraid to go inside.

This will be a big test for forward Sagaba Konate.  He has played well the last 4 games it will be interesting to see how he performs against the bigger team.

UCF is a sneaky good team and they will be playing for an NCAA Tournament bid come March.  If West Virginia doesn’t perform well, this will be a resume builder for the Golden Knights.
