Late Comeback Attempt Not Enough for Geno Smith, Seahawks on Thursday Night Football

The Geno Smith comeback season story took a major blow on Thursday Night Football.

It was arguably the biggest game of the season for Smith and the Seahawks and a chance to rebound from a tough loss, but it did not go the way of the WVU Sports Hall of Famer. San Francisco beat Seattle 21-13 in a game they led from start to finish.

As for Smith, he completed 70.5% of his passes and threw for 238 yards with a touchdown. He also ran for 18 yards. However, the Seahawks failed to get into the end zone until late in the fourth quarter. Fellow Mountaineer and Seahawks teammate, who is in the midst of his third tenure with the franchise, Bruce Irvin recorded two solo tackles and an assist in the game.

The win hands the 49ers the NFC West division title and puts pressure on Seattle if they’re going to join them in the playoffs. After back-to-back losses, Smith’s team drops to .500 at 7-7. This has pivoted the conversation from arguments that Smith deserved MVP consideration to if the Seahawks can salvage the solid season that could be slipping away.

Next up for the Seahawks will be the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, Dec. 24 at 1 pm EST.
