West Virginia great Geno Smith has been considered as one of the top NFL free agents for 2023 ever since he started to take off during his likely comeback player of the year season.

Well, he may not actually be a free agent this year as NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported this morning on NFL Gameday that he is likely to return to the Seattle Seahawks for the 2023 season.

It’s unknown what type of contract Smith will get given his age of 32 being higher than normal for a major extension to a quarterback, especially someone who just had his first truly great year. If he were to be franchise tagged though, he would make $30 million next year.

Smith has had a storybook season leading a thought to be rebuilding Seahawks team to a 9-8 record and postseason berth. They had the league’s ninth best scoring offense this past season with an average of 23.9 points per game.

He finished the season throwing for 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns only 11 interceptions, completing 69.8% of his passes and posting an 100.9 rating overall. He also ran for 366 yards and scored a touchdown on the ground.

Smith and the Seahawks will take on the San Francisco 49ers today at 4:30 p.m. EST in San Francisco. The game will be the first postseason appearance for Smith.
