MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU wide receivers coach Bilal Marshall feels Hudson Clement has stood out above the rest throughout the summer.

When asked about Clement taking his game to another level in 2024, Marshall immediately said the West Virginian native has had the best summer in the receiver room. Marshall made it clear that he’t not taking anything away from any other player, but the work Clement’s been putting in has been noticeable.

According to Marshall, Clement knows he needs to work on route running and getting separation in order to truly get to that next level. Marshall added that to Clement’s credit, he’s stayed working just as hard as he did when he was a walk-on.

Clement is a big reason why Marshall is confident in the receiver group this year. “I’m really excited about what we got in the room right now.”

Not that long ago, Hudson Clement was an unknown player fighting for a scholarship, but he’s now being regarded as one of the best in the conference.

Back in May, PFF ranked Clement as one of the highest graded returning wide receivers in the Big 12. Clement comes in at No. 6 on their list with a grade of 78.3.

Clement’s emergence was one of the most surprising stories during the 2023 season, earning a scholarship after a breakout performance against Duquesne and then establishing himself as one of Garrett Greene’s most trusted targets.

WVU’s Hudson Clement Goes From Walk-On to One of the Top WRs in Big 12

Nothing may top 2023 as far as a memorable season, but WVU head coach Neal Brown believes Clement hasn’t come close to reaching his full potential. During the spring session, Brown even went as far as saying no skilled player has had a better offseason than Clement.

Of course, Brown is talking about Clement getting his body in exceptional shape and being physically at a completely different level from where he was one year ago. Brown’s comments about Clement’s physique will only further intensify the expectations for him in 2024.

In fact, the former walk-on was ranked as one of the highest graded freshman wide receivers from 2023 by PFF at the end of January. The Martinsburg, W.Va native was awarded a grade of 78.3, putting just over Kansas State’s Jayce Brown for the top spot out of the Big 12.

Clement finished the season with 22 catches for 480 yards and four touchdowns. He earned a scholarship for his work in West Virginia’s second game of the season, exploding for 177 yards and three scores against Duquesne. Clement also made five receptions for 89 yards in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl victory over North Carolina.

In addition to being ranked as one of the best freshman at his position, PFF also made Clement their highest graded freshman wide receiver against press coverage.

With several more years of eligibility remaining and now a place on the West Virginia roster secured, there’s no telling what type of season Clement could have in 2024 as an encore, although it will be tough to beat 2023 in terms of a storybook tale fans will remember for years to come.
