West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins as well as players Kedrian Johnson, Emmitt Matthews and Erik Stevenson will represent the Mountaineers next Wednesday for Big 12 media day. The Hall of Fame coach and the trio of Mountaineers will head to Kansas City to kickoff the 2022-23 season.

Huggins is entering his 16th year as the head coach for his alma mater. West Virginia is coming off a 16-17 record last season but is looking to bounce back after recruiting the transfer portal. Two of the guys going to Kansas City, Matthews and Stevenson, were recruited by Huggins and his staff from the portal. Matthews spent his sole season at Washington averaging 11.7 points and 4.7 rebounds. Stevenson played at South Carolina last season recording 11.6 points on 37 percent shooting from the field.

Johnson, who is 1-of-5 returning players for WVU, reflected on what the difference is between last year’s team and this year’s so far.

“The difference is how we bound off the court as well as on the court. Compared to last year it’s a big change of people being in the gym, working out, attitudes on the court,” Johnson said. “Our chemistry is a lot better early on.”

West Virginia will play in-front of the public for the first time on Friday night for the Gold-Blue Debut at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers will also host Bowling Green on Oct. 28 for a charity exhibition game.
