West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins said on Thursday afternoon that Gonzaga would have a tremendous awakening if they joined the Big 12 Conference. The Big 12 has reportedly been in talks about adding Gonzaga to the conference.

“I would think it would be a tremendous awakening for Gonzaga to get in this league and play who we play day after day,” Huggins said. “You don’t get to make your own schedule in the Big 12.”

Huggins went on to talk about how the conferences just aren’t the same anymore. Proximity essentially doesn’t matter anymore as the next conference realignment is a battle for who can go coast-to-coast.

“Back in the Big East days, fans could just jump in a car and attend a road game,” Huggins said. “Think about the fans that we had at the Big East tournament.”

Pete Thamel of ESPN reported on Wednesday night that Gonzaga Director of Athletics Chris Standiford met with new Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark in Texas last week.

Gonzaga has put themselves in a position to be known as one of the modern day blue bloods. Since the hiring of Mark Few in 1999, the Bulldogs have reached the NCAA Tournament Championship twice, 2-Final Four’s, 12-Sweet Sixteen’s and 23-straight NCAA Tournament appearances.

West Virginia and Gonzaga have played five times with the Bulldogs winning every contest. The last two met in December 2020 in Indianapolis for a top-15 matchup. Gonzaga defeated WVU 87-82.
