A day after WVU confirmed the news and then Texas officially announced the hiring of Chad Scott, the former West Virginia coach released a statement to Mountaineer Nation.

“It’s been an honor and a privilege for my family and I to call West Virginia home for the past six years. I’m immensely grateful for my time at WVU, the staff, and all the players, especially my #BigLeagueBacks! To everyone who was part of our time here, and Mountaineer Nation, thank you for your unwavering support and passion,” said Scott.

WVU head coach Rich Rodriguez actually confirmed Scottโ€™s exit by mentioning it during a press conference prior to Texas publicizing his hire.

Up until his exit, Scott was working as a member of Rodriguezโ€™s staff. Rodriguez decided to retain Scott on his staff in the interest of furthering the development of running backs like Jahiem White and to help with recruiting.

โ€œI have an appreciation and respect for the job that Chad has done here at West Virginia,โ€ WVU head coach Rich Rodriguez said about retaining Scott.

โ€œHe brings a high level of energy and has a history of building relationships and developing players. I look forward to having him as a member of our staff.โ€

Chad Scott came to WVU in 2019 along with former head coach Neal Brown and has been a well-liked and effective running backs coach ever since. He has also served as co-offensive coordinator (2019-21), run game coordinator (2022-23) and offensive coordinator (2024). Scott was the teamโ€™s interim head coach for the Frisco Bowl last month.

Since coming to WVU, Scott helped develop Leddie Brown into a back-to-back 1,000-yard rusher in 2020 and 2021 and recruited and developed the tandem of CJ Donaldson and Jahiem White that produced over 1,500 combined yards each of the last two seasons. Donaldson announced his transfer to Ohio State in December.

Scott has done all of his work at WVU the old-school way, not making use of the transfer portal. All of WVUโ€™s running backs during his tenure have been high school recruits that Scott signed and developed. That includes Donaldson, who came to WVU as a tight end and was moved to running back.
