Big 12 Quarterback Forced to Medically Retire

A Big 12 star announced the unfortunate end of his football career on Monday. Utah quarterback Cam Rising has been forced to medically retire from playing football.
Despite the option to return to the Utes for another season, Rising has been advised to stop playing all together. Rising’s entire college career was marred by injuries, most recently being pushed into a Gatorade station on the Baylor sideline of a game during the 2024 season. That incident kept him out of action until he returned to start a loss to eventual conference champion Arizona State in October.

“Due to a hand injury I suffered during the Baylor game, Iโve been advised by two orthopedic physicians that I will never be able to return to playing football,” Rising said. “Iโll be obtaining a third medical opinion and will undergo the recommended surgery. I will continue to rehab and do all I can to get healthy. In the meantime, I will unfortunately be forced to medically retire from the game I love.”
For more bad luck, Rising then suffered a leg injury against ASU that caused him to miss the remainder of the season. These injuries were after multiple prior season-ending injuries in 2023 and 2023. Even after one of his best seasons, Rising endured a leg injury in the Rose Bowl against Penn State, one that led to his lost 2023 season.
Rising started his college career in 2018 with Texas before transferring to Utah.ย In 2021, Rising was able to play all 13 games and threw for 20 touchdowns with just five interceptions. He then completed 65% of his passes for 3,034 yards and 26 touchdowns with just eight interceptions.
He finished his career with a 20-8 record, 6,127 yards passing yards, 986 yards on the ground and 65 total touchdowns.
