WVU Baseball Ties Program Record, Drubs Kansas State 10-3

WVU Baseball tied their program record for wins in a season on Saturday, May 10, defeating the Kansas State Wildcats 10-3 on the road. The Mountaineers (40-9, 19-5 Big 12) have four games left in the regular season, as well as the Big 12 and NCAA Tournaments, to improve upon their program best.
Despite the dominant final score, Kansas State took charge in the early innings. The Wildcats tagged starter Chase Meyer, who allowed three runs in 4.1 innings, for one run in the first inning.
Two one-out singles helped West Virginia take the lead in the second, with Grant Hussey grounding out to score one run and Chase Swain racing home on a wild pitch for the other, but the Wildcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, tacking on two more runs before Brodie Kresser could work a 6-3 double play to end the threat.
Seven straight Mountaineers reached base with two outs in the fourth inning as West Virginia seized an 8-3 lead. Kyle West put the finishing touches on the scoring rally, working the count full before winning his left-on-left matchup with a 401 foot grand slam to right-center.

Left-hander Ben McDougal took over for Meyer midway through the fifth and finished the game, allowing one hit over 4.2 scoreless innings. West Virginia’s offense added insurance in the sixth inning on a two-run double from Jace Rinehart, his second two-bagger and third hit of the evening, while McDougal cruised to victory by recording 11 straight outs.
WVU Baseball will look to take the series with the Wildcats at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 11.
