The worst kept secret in the country became official on Sunday when Marshall and Charles Huff parted ways, with the school not renewing his contract. And for Huff, he’s now the new head coach at Southern Miss.

While this has been in rumors for weeks, the school and Huff tried to deny the validity of the reports as the Thundering Herd completed an historic season.

Huff did address the rumors about his possible interest in another job during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

“The first year I was supposed to be going to Virginia Tech. I’m still here. Second year I was supposed to be going to Michigan State. I’m still here. Third year you’re going to fire me. I’m still here. I think it’s just part of what happens,” said Huff about the rumors he’s a candidate for the Southern Miss job.

Huff even credited Marshall’s success in 2024 and turning things around from the disappointment of 2023 as the reason his name is associated with an opening elsewhere.

On Saturday night, Marshall dominated Louisiana 31-3 to win the Sun Belt title, the program’s first conference title of any kind since 2014.

The win in the Sun Belt Conference Championship Game awarded the Herd their 10th win of the season, marking a new best during the Huff era.

Last year, Marshall endured a disappointing 6-7 season that followed winning nine games and a bowl game in 2022. The losing wasn’t even the worst part about the season either. There was constant drama surrounding comments he made and what players said about fans.

The 2024 season then became mostly about winning, with the biggest viral moment being a funny NIL sales pitch to Ohio State players before a game against the Buckeyes.

Huff now exits Huntington having led Marshall on one of the best seasons in school history since advancing to the FBS level.

The Huff era ends after a roller coaster ride of three years that’s highlighted by the title and a big win over Notre Dame. Huff went 32-20 and 1-2 in bowl games at Marshall.

It’s expected Marshall will now name North Carolina State defensive coordinator and West Virginia its next head coach.
