WVU men’s basketball head coach Darian DeVries released a statement about his latest transfer signee Javon Small.

“We are excited to have Javon joining our program. He is a tremendous playmaker at both ends of the floor. He has a great feel for the game and can hurt you as a scorer and a facilitator. We look forward to having our fans watch him compete this upcoming season,” said DeVries about adding Small to the roster.

The WVU basketball staff made the most of a recruit visiting on Monday, getting the Oklahoma State transfer guard to officially sign with the Mountaineers.

Small committed to West Virginia on May 1, but was technically allowed to still be recruited by other schools. Kansas was recently linked to Small before today.

Small spent this past season at Oklahoma State, averaging 15.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists through 31 games. The 6-foot-3 guard shot 44% from the field, 37% from three and 86% from the free throw line. In a win against West Virginia on Jan. 27, Small had 15 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists.

During his recruitment, Small visited Miami (FL) and Ole Miss, while having interest from notable schools like Kansas, Texas, Louisville, Michigan and other high-major teams.

Small has a connection with Nelson Hernandez, WVU’s director of recruiting, and Eduardo Andre, WVU’s big man pickup from Fresno State.

Small began his career at East Carolina, where he appeared in 34 games over two years. Small took a huge jump between his freshman and sophomore seasons, boosting his points per game average by 13.

Small has one year of eligibility remaining.

Small becomes the sixth transfer WVU has picked up this offseason, joining Tucker DeVries (G – Drake), Sencire Harris (G – Illinois), Amani Hansberry (F – Illinois), Toby Okani (F – UIC) and Eduardo Andre (C – Fresno State).

West Virginia has lost Josiah Harris (F), Seth Wilson (G), Patrick Suemnick (F), Kerr Kriisa (G), Jeremiah Bembry (G), Kobe Johnson (G), Ali Ragab (C) and Noah Farrakhan (G) to the transfer portal so far.
