Elite In-State Punter Jimmy Gregg Becomes First Since Randy Moss to Earn High Honor
Jimmy Gregg may not be going to WVU, but he’s making West Virginia proud nonetheless. The nation’s top punter achieved something no football player in the state has been able to accomplish since Randy Moss.
Gregg has been named a Rivals High School First Team All-American, making him the first West Virginia player to earn the honor since Moss in 1995.

Listed at 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, Gregg is a 2026 product of University High School in Morgantown.
WVU recruited Gregg hard, sending special teams coordinator Pat Kirkland to his home in May and then inviting Gregg to the facility to spend time with head coach Rich Rodriguez and the rest of the staff. However, Gregg decided to take his talents up north to Syracuse instead of becoming a Mountaineer.
In-State Star Punter Jimmy Gregg Explains Why He Picked Syracuse Over WVU
Prior to his recruitment, Gregg rocketed 37 punts for a total of 1,581 yards in 2024. He recorded an average of 42.7 yards and placed 20 balls inside the 20-yard-line, including nine inside the 10.
โI would describe myself as a power punter where I punt accurately and with great hang time specifically from the pocket,โ Gregg told WV Sports Now during an interview.
North Carolina State and Purdue were the other Power Four programs who showed the most interest in Gregg. Fairmont State and Marshall provided Gregg offers from smaller schools in the state as well.
In addition to his official visit at WVU, North Carolina State and Purdue welcomed Gregg for full weekend visits and he even toured Arkansas and met with James Franklin when he was at Penn State earlier in the spring of 2025.
