Grier’s Draft Stock, Potential Continues to Rise

Will Grier

Depending on which source you want to cite, senior quarterback Will Grier will either be the first signal caller taken in the 2019 NFL Draft or he’ll fall to the second or third round.

Or if you’re this guy, you have reason to believe he might not get drafted at all.

By most accounts, Allbright’s opinion is an outlier. He will get drafted.

According to outlets like CBSSports, Athlon Sports, and NFL.com, Grier is penciled in as one of the best quarterbacks in the 2019 class. If you read between the lines, however, he needs to further develop in order to meet the lofty expectations set before him.

His 12 interceptions from last season need to be addressed. Grier will need to improve upon that number while also demonstrating he has the arm strength to make any throw he will need to at the next level. Most importantly, he will need to stay healthy. If not for a hand injury suffered in the first quarter of the Texas game, Grier was on track to tally over 4,000 passing yards and 40 touchdowns.  And he’ll probably need to do that in 2019 to be considered the best quarterback available.

The biggest question that is sure to follow Grier throughout the draft process is his size. At 6’2″, he is an inch shorter than the NFL average for starting quarterbacks but it’s his weight that will have scouts intrigued. He’s listed at 214-lbs but could stand to add some muscle to his frame in order to absorb some of the hits he’ll take as a professional. It’s about passing the eye test. He needs to look like he’s ready for the NFL.

It’s May. And we’re still figuring out what kind of impact this year’s draft class will make for their new NFL teams. But, it’s a good sign that Grier is already finding himself on draft boards for 2019.
