JJ Quinerly Reaches 2,000 Points, Moves into WVU All-Time Top 3

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — WVU star senior JJ Quinerly reached a milestone during Saturday’s NCAA Tournament win over Columbia that only three other Mountaineers have ever reached before her.
With a jump shot in the third quarter of the Mountaineers’ first-round win over Columbia, Quinerly scored her 2,000th career point in the Old Gold and Blue.
“It’s just an amazing accomplishment,” a beaming Quinerly said after the game. “I think I’ve dreamed of scoring 2,000 points my whole life. Seeing it happen and being where I’m at with this group of girls and the coach I have, I love it.”

Quinerly entered this NCAA Tournament, her third with the Mountaineers, with 1,981 career points. She knew she needed 19 to reach 2,000, but at no point during the game was she thinking about it.
“I knew I needed 19 (points), but I wasn’t really thinking about it,” she said. “I just shot it.”
That basket also moved Quinerly into a tie with Bria Holmes for third place on WVU’s all-time scoring list. A three-pointer later in the fourth quarter pushed Quinerly into sole possession with 2,008 points, trailing only WVU greats Cathy Parson (2,113) and Rosemary Kosiorek (2,061).

Quinerly finished with a game-high 27 points against the Lions and seven steals, giving her 327 in her career, also good for third all-time in WVU history.
“If we had a Mount Rushmore, JJ Quinerly should be on that list,” second-year WVU coach Mark Kellogg said. “I think she’s solidifying herself with the steals and the points and the loyalty. She’s stayed for four years in an era where that’s unlikely, especially through three coaching changes.”
Kellogg is Quinerly’s third coach in four seasons at West Virginia. She played one season under both longtime WVU coach Mike Carey and Dawn Plitzuweit. Kellogg said he doesn’t try to take much credit for the player Quinerly has become for WVU.
“Every once in a while she’ll make a move and I’ll look over to the bench like ‘that’s not coaching, that has nothing to do with me,'” he joked. “She’s just extremely talented.”
Quinerly and backcourt running mate Jordan Harrison were the driving force for the Mountaineers in their 78-59 victory. The pair combined for 50 points with Harrison tying her career-high of 23.
“Once you see one of us going, it just motivates the other to keep going like we did tonight,” Harrison said. “Playing with a guard like JJ is my dream come true. It makes the game so much easier and gives me a lot of confidence in my game.”
JJ Quinerly and the Mountaineers advance to Monday’s second round, where they will take on the winner of North Carolina and Oregon State. Tipoff time and broadcast channel for that game are to be determined.
