Marcus Caldeira kicked the WVU men’s soccer team to a come-from-behind win over old Big East foe St. John’s to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night.

Back in front of the home crowd at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium for maybe the last time, the Ontario, Canada native scored a hat trick and golden goal in overtime for the Mountaineers. WVU celebrated the 4-3 win in the stands with the home crowd after the win.

It was a defensive match in the first 45 minutes – the match was nil to nil heading into halftime. The Red Storm then came out on fire, taking a 2-0 lead in the first six minutes of the second half. One goal came from a hand ball leading to the penalty kick by Bjorn Nikolajewski at 0:57 into the second half. The second goal came from Gabe Smyth.

In the 69th minute, Caldeira scored to bring the Mountaineers within one goal of the Red Storm. The equalizer came from Nic Scargle, with his first goal of the season in the 79th minute. St. John’s would again take the lead before Caldeira’s second and third goals on the evening.

WVU Men’s Soccer will now head to the second round games that start on Sunday, Nov. 23, followed by the third round on Nov. 29 and 30. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Dec. 5 and 6.
