Marshall HC Charles Huff Responds to Rumors About His Interest in Another Job
Coaching rumors are common to this time of year in college football, but they aren’t something Marshall head coach Charles Huff is worried about. Despite wishing he could just ignore the noise, Huff did address the rumors about his possible interest in another job during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.
“The first year I was supposed to be going to Virginia Tech. I’m still here. Second year I was supposed to be going to Michigan State. I’m still here. Third year you’re going to fire me. I’m still here. I think it’s just part of what happens,” said Huff about the rumors he’s a candidate for the Southern Miss job.
Huff even credited Marshall’s success in 2024 and turning things around from the disappointment of 2023 as the reason his name is associated with an opening elsewhere.
Huff: “The first year I was supposed to be going to Virginia Tech. I'm still here. Second year I was supposed to be going to Michigan State. I'm still here. Third year you're going to fire me. I'm still here. I think it's just part of what happens.”

And regardless of what’s true and what’s simply a rumor, Huff is right about his value increasing based on the 2024 season.
Last year, Marshall endured a disappointing 6-7 season that followed winning nine games and a bowl game in 2022. The losing wasn’t even the worst part about the season either. There was constant drama surrounding comments he made and what players said about fans.
But this season has been mostly about winning, with the biggest viral moment being a funny NIL sales pitch to Ohio State players before a game against the Buckeyes.
Fast forward to the present day and the Thundering Herd are pursuing a conference title and their best season yet under Huff.
Will this newfound success pivot Huff into a better opportunity? How much better of an opportunity would Southern Miss even be for example? It’s not as if he’s being connected to Power For jobs. Those are all questions that remain to be answered, but it’s clear Huff wants the current focus to only be about his team’s next game, and this week’s opponent is a Sun Belt showdown with JMU.
“I wish the fans could be in the team meetings. I wish the fans could be in the locker room, because then they’d know it’s just rumors.”
Huff is 30-20 and 19-12 in conference play in now his fourth year as Marshall’s head coach.
