Mike Asti’s WVU Football Camp Takeaways: Still Evaluating, Teaching, Getting Over Early Cramps
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Wednesday, July 30th marked the start of WVU football camp for the 2025 Mountaineers. And unlike the spring or summer periods, there’s a sense of urgency brought by actual games on the horizon.
With Rodriguez set to talk to the media after practice most days, I will regularly offer a bulleted synopsis of what he says, often times adding what it all means for the team.
Takeaways from Rodriguez’s camp opening press conference: ย
- Rodriguez revealed that about a dozen players were cramping up after the first practice of camp.
- Rodriguez is still focusing on evaluating and teaching early in camp.
- Rodriguez says heโs still planning on giving all five quarterbacks a good chunk of reps early in camp. He also reiterated heโs not against playing multiple quarterbacks.
- Rodriguez seems to believe his coaches and players all now have a full grasp of what “HardEdge” is all about.ย
- Rodriguez said, maybe half joking and half serious, that he could still look to the players who are left available in the transfer portal if he feels it’s necessary.
- Rodriguez is still weeks removed from worrying about a depth chart and has told his players to not even think about it right now.
- Rodriguez said the players who are still waiting for an NCAA waiver to player have to work out on their own. He added that he hopes that gets decided soon.
Translation from Rodriguez’s first press conference of camp:ย
Rodriguez is still unwilling to reveal too much about the progression of any one player. But with that said, he seems more pleased with the effort and awareness of what he expects than he was during the spring. He even said that he now trusts that everyone, from the coaches to the players, understands what it means to be “Hard Edge” and credits being able to work directly with the players throughly the summer as a big advantage compared to the past.
