MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU depth chart remains wide open at the start of camp, but the quarterback competition remains the most important position battle. And after the first practice of camp, Rich Rodriguez offered an update about where the quarterback room stands a month before the season gets underway.

First and foremost, Rodriguez dusted off his spring joke, asking what time the Week 1 game against Robert Morris kicks off as when he will announce his starting quarterback. He also reiterated a past point he’s made about not being against playing multiple quarterbacks.

Rodriguez even went as far to say that he could incorporate enough different packages and plays for each quarterback, debunking any thought that opponents will know what to expect when the No. 2 guy enters the game.

โ€œSome coaches say if you have two, you have none; if you have three, you have none. I donโ€™t believe that I say if youโ€™re good enough to win, just play with them, thatโ€™s for any position including quarterback,โ€ said Rodriguez at the Big 12 Media Days event

Rodriguez has continuously emphasized that he will try to get any player who shows he’s good enough to help the team on the field as much as possible. Even though there can only be one starting quarterback, that mentality doesnโ€™t exclude his quarterbacks, especially since heโ€™s confident in his system and the group as a whole.

Rodriguez believes his system is โ€œquarterback centricโ€ and heโ€™s intentionally made it โ€œfreshman proofโ€ and easy to learn. Heโ€™s done this intentionally in case he loses a player to the transfer portal or an injury.

Rep wise, he’s still planning on focusing on getting all five quarterbacks ready. He did admit that he will eventually have to narrow down his evaluation to two (maybe three) quarterback and reduce the reps of those not expected to play as much in games.

Of course, the true competition is still between the incumbent Nicco Marchiol and Jaylen Henderson, a former top prospect and transfer addition.
