Mountaineers Streak ends in loss to Morehead State

The West Virginia Mountaineers (10-6) dropped the second of a two-game series against the Morehead State Eagles Wednesday afternoon 9-6. WVU was coming off their second season high performance with a 9-3 win over the Eagles on Tuesday. The Mountaineers came out hot but control issues on the mound and some sloppy defense attributed to the three-point loss that ended a five-game winning streak.

West Virginia lead-off hitter Tyler Doanes started the game with a single to left field and Ivan Gonzalez followed it up with a homerun over the centerfield wall to give the Mountaineers the early 2-0 lead. The Mountaineers added another run in the second after Tevin Tucker drew a walk, stole second and came home after Garret Rogers failed to pick him off at second as the ball bounced off Ryan Layne’s glove out to right field.

Morehead State came soaring back and took the lead in the second inning. West Virginia starting pitcher Brock Helverson started the inning on a ground out but followed it up hitting consecutive batters. Stephen Hill loaded the bases with a single into left field and a passed ball brought in the Eagles first run.

Zach Boyd hit a 2 RBI single up the middle and back to back singles from Connor Pauley and Jake Hammon gave Morehead State a 5-4 advantage.

Heverson went back out on the mound for the Mountaineers. He hit two more batters and gave up two more runs before WVU head coach Randy Mazey pulled him from the game.

Zach Reid came in with runners at second and third and one out. Reid gave up an RBI single but got out of the inning on a pick-off play at third and strikeout.

West Virginia picked up a run in the fourth on a Tyler Doanes sacrifice fly to left field bringing Tevin Tucker home.

Morehead State continued their offense and stopped any momentum West Virginia was trying to create with two doubles from Trevor Snyder and Hunter Fain adding another run in the bottom of the fourth.

The Mountaineers grabbed a run in the seventh inning on a wild pitch. WVU had the tying run come up to the plate in the eighth inning but couldn’t bring anyone across home plate as West Virginia falls 9-6.
