Mountaineers Trounce Turtles
The West Virginia Mountaineers (20-12) traveled to College Park, Maryland Wednesday evening and defeated the Maryland Terrapins (16-16) 8-1 inside Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
Maryland starting pitcher Nick Turnbull walked two and gave up a base hit to Darius Hill to load the bases, before Tyler Doanes scored on a passed ball.
Paul McIntosh scored Brandon White on a sacrifice groundball to third. Afterward, Turnbull walked Ivan Gonzalez and that brought Terrapin head coach Rob Vaughn to the mound, calling upon his bullpen.
Daniel O’Conner came to the mound and an error loaded the bases for the Mountaineers. O’Conner hit Phillip Dull to bring in another run.
Then with two outs, Austin Davis hit an RBI single up the middle to cap off a four-run inning for the Mountaineers.
West Virginia was gifted a run in the in the third when O’Conner walked four Mountaineers to extend the WVU to 5-0.
Tyler Doanes hit a solo homerun to start the fifth inning, then AJ Lee put Maryland on the board with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. However, Andrew Zitel would pinch hit in the eighth and deliver with a two-run home run to put the Terps away.
The Mountaineers return home Friday evening to take on the No. 11 Texas Tech Red Raiders. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm est inside Monongalia County Ballpark.
