WVU Football DB commit Fred Perry

All 105 is a West Virginia Sports Now series profiling each member of the 2025 WVU Football Roster.

Fred Perry began his college career under Rich Rodriguez at Jacksonville State, leading the Gamecocks in total tackles or solo tackles during each of his three seasons there. He’ll suit up as a nickel defender with the Mountaineers in 2025, which could end up as a starting role depending on what personnel grouping new defensive coordinator Zac Alley decides to deploy.

A sure tackler who also excelled at rushing the passer during his time at Jacksonville State, Perry spent his first two seasons in college under new Mountaineers’ nickels/sams coach Henry Weinreich. His track record of standout play and familiarity with the scheme should help Perry play a major role with WVU Football during his final season in college.

5 • Fred Perry, senior nickel safety

Last year: Playing under Rich Rodriguez at Jacksonville State, Perry earned First Team All-Conference USA honors after leading the Gamecocks in tackles.

Stats: 110 tackles, three sacks, 10 tackles for loss, two pass breakups and two forced fumbles in 2024.

Camp outlook: Perry is one of just four nickel defensive backs listed on the roster, a testament to the specialized role he’ll play with WVU Football.

Projected role: Expect Perry to land atop the depth chart at nickel safety. If the Mountaineers employ a nickel package as their base defense, he could start like he did at Jacksonville State.

Accolades, highlights: Perry landed on the East-West Shrine Bowl watchlist, indicative of his professional potential, after earning a First Team All-Conference USA selection in 2024.
