Potential WVU candidate Niko Medved coached Colorado State to a 67-42 win over Virginia in a First Four matchup in Dayton on Tuesday night. This marks the first NCAA Tournament win by Medved in his head coaching career.

CSU moves on to play 7-seed Texas on Thursday in the round of 64.

Virginia’s offense struggled throughout the night, going into halftime with just 14 points. UVA finished the night shooting 25% from the field, going nine minutes without a single point during the first half.

Medved is in his sixth season at Colorado State, second NCAAT appearance overall. The Rams made the NCAA Tournament in 2022, falling in the first round to 11-seed Michigan. Medved has a 61.5 winning percentage during his six seasons at CSU. Colorado State is currently at 25-10, hitting No. 13 as their peak in the AP poll after an early season win, beating Creighton by 21 points.

Medved has been a usual name linked with West Virginia’s coaching search. Medved has more consistent success compared to the rest of the mid-majors on the list. Medved has coached at Furman (2013-17), Drake (2017-18) and Colorado State (2018-).

Medved’s wife is from Morgantown and the two got married at the Marriott Waterfront over a decade ago.

WV Sports Now will provide updates on how each of WVU’s potential candidates do during March Madness.
