Pat McAfee Tells Old WVU Stories After Kirk Herbstreit Mentions West Virginia
Pat McAfee and Kirk Herbstreit spent most of the 2023 season arguing about the West Virginia Mountaineers. But after WVU’s surprise season ended up costing Herbstreit a bet to McAfee, it was only matter of time before WVU was brought up when the longtime ESPN college football analyst appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday to talk college football.
Herbstreit even made the first West Virginia comment, giving a “holy cow” while thinking about McAfee hosting his show live on the WVU campus in Morgantown on Friday. “That’s going to be wild,” added Herbstreit.
McAfee tried to suggest he will be well behaved compared his apparent drunken state from last weekend in Ireland, but Herbstreit wasn’t hearing ant of that.
"I can't wait to watch you guys in Morgantown"

The conversation then shifted to Herbstreit bringing up former Mountaineer Owen Schmitt and asking McAfee about what it was like to be teammates with the man affectionately referred to as a “runaway beer truck” by WVU fans. McAfee also told stories about this college days and where he lived in town as a student.

To no surprise, Herbstreit is not as high on West Virginia’s chances to win the Big 12 this season. Unlike McAfee, Herbstreit did not include the Mountaineers his College Football Playoff picks.
As was mentioned by Herbstreit, McAfee will be in Morgantown to host his show a day before WVU’s season opener against Penn State. The Friday, Aug. 30 edition of “The Pat McAfee Show” will broadcast live from near the Life Sciences Building, which sits right in the middle of WVU’s downtown campus. This is where the old Mountaineer Field was located.
On Monday, Penn State head coach James Franklin offered a response to what McAfee has been saying about West Virginia opening the season with the Nittany Lions in Morgantown.
And while Franklin respects what McAfee brings to college football, he explained why his team won’t be feeding into any back and forth with WVU players or notable alumni.
“Well, first of all, I love Pat McAfee and his energy and enthusiasm for sports. I think he’s been good for college athletics in general. I think he’s fun. I think his ability to speak freely is unique and fun in a lot of ways. For us, it’s a fine line. I think it’s very similar to the old billboard material. I want to make sure that our guys don’t say anything and our staff doesn’t say anything that creates billboard material because for some people, that motivates them. I want to make sure that I’m not talking out of both sides of my mouth with our staff and our players because I also strongly recommend our players getting off of social media, especially in-season. That’s easier said than done.”
