WVU Baseball’s superstar shortstop JJ Wetherholt, the likely first overall pick in this year’s MLB Entry Draft, is set to miss the Mountaineers’ weekend series against the Charlotte 49ers, according to a report from ESPN baseball insider Kiley McDaniel.

McDaniel also said that Wetherholt’s hamstring injury is not a repeat of the injury he suffered over the summer, which had been a topic of speculation since the shortstop exited during the first inning of the second game of the Mountaineers’ Monday doubleheader at Stetson.

“Wetherholt is out for this weekend’s series in Charlotte, per sources,” McDaniel tweeted. “He has a grade 1 hamstring strain, which is a different muscle than his summer injury. Remains day-to-day.”

WV Sports Now reached out to WVU Baseball to confirm the report, but the Mountaineers reiterated the update provided by head coach Randy Mazey yesterday: namely that they’re taking Wetherholt’s recovery on a day by day basis and declining to confirm whether it’s the same leg affecting him.

The Mountaineers will play four games at Charlotte this weekend before returning to Morgantown to host their home opener against Canisius on February 28. With the expanded Big 12 schedule meaning that the conference slate opens three weeks before it did last year, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Mountaineers play it slow and steady as JJ Wetherholt continues to rehab his injury.
