Report: WVU Basketball to Open Charleston Classic Against ACC School

Ross Hodge and his WVU basketball team now know their first opponent for this year’s Charleston Classic.
According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, West Virginia will open against Clemson. Georgia and Xavier will then battle each other in the other first round matchup of the bracket.
West Virginia has a brief history will all three of its potential opponents. WVU and Clemson have played six times, most recently in the third-place game of the 2021 Charleston Classic. West Virginia won that night 66-59 and holds a 5-1 advantage in the overall series that dates back to 1952.
The Mountaineers are 1-2 in three games against Xavier, most recently playing in 2022. WVU won the first meeting between the two in 1979 but lost in 2008 and again in 2022. Georgia has also faced WVU three times, but WVU is 2-1 against the Bulldogs in a series that hasn’t been played since 1998. The Mountaineers beat Georgia in the first meeting in 1993 and again in 1997 before the Bulldogs won the following season.
The other four-team bracket includes Boston College, Davidson, Tulane and Utah State. The tournament will take place on Nov. 21 and 23. Each team will play two games. Opening-round matchup and tip-off times will be announced at a later date.
This will be West Virginia’s second appearance in the Charleston Classic. Clemson and Davidson will be making their fifth appearance each, the most of any school.
