Rich Rodriguez Wants WVU to ‘Celebrate the Hell’ Out of Virginia Win Before Turning Page

CHARLOTTE – West Virginia’s Rich Rodriguez mixed a celebratory mood with the chaser of knowing they still have a the long season ahead after his Mountaineers beat No. 25 Virginia 38-27 on Saturday night.

Because for Rodriguez, it’s about enjoying each big wins as they come while also keeping everything in perspective.

Rodriguez said he would let his team “celebrate the hell out of this one” and grab some red solo cups to soak up the significance of the moment.

“I mean, we’ll celebrate the hell out of it for the next 24 hours. You know, we’ll take a red solo cup, put a little a juice in it. And, uh, you know, we probably won’t drink wine and put our pinky finger out, but we will have some red solo cups,” said the 63-year-old coach.

“I bet there’s some mountaineer fans as we speak, somewhere in the city of Charlotte with some red solo cups and refreshments in there as we speak. So, I wish I was with there. I’ll probably share one with my buddies on the way home.”

And knowing what a win over a program representing a state on the border means to the people of West Virginia, Rodriguez made sure to thank the fans who traveled to Charlotte, N.C. for their efforts on the night.

“Really excited for our players and the fans. I thought we had a home field advantage. Our fans were fantastic the whole game.”

As for what happened on the field, Rodriguez called Mike Hawkins, who scored five total touchdowns and accounted for 313 of the Mountaineer offense’s 437 yards, “electric” and complimented his poise above all else.
