Stellar Eaglestaff Night Leads WVU Basketball Past Arizona State

WVU basketball secured its first road Big 12 conference win, thanks in part to a big night from senior guard Tresyen Eaglestaff. He finished the game with 23 points with six made three-pointers en route to a 75-63 WVU win.

WVU had a short lead to begin the game as senior center Harlan Obioha scored the game’s first points with a layup. Senior guard Jasper Floyd added a jumper for a 4-2 WVU lead at the 18:25 mark.

Arizona State took advantage quickly, going on a 9-0 run before Eaglestaff made his first three-pointer. to cut the score to 11-7. After trading buckets, ASU went on another run for a commanding 23-11 lead.

The Mountaineers rallied with a 10-2 run in just under two minutes of game time which featured two more threes from Eaglestaff.

Eaglestaff continued his hot streak, making all four of his first three-pointers and leading all first half scorers with 14 points.

Senior guard Honor Huff joined the scoring party with his first made shot being a deep buzzer-beating three-pointer to end the half. The Mountaineers managed to minimize the gap, but trailed 37-35 at halftime.

Obioha added a point to start the second half by going 1-2 from the foul line. Arizona State had a four-point swing before six unanswered points by WVU, capped off by a three-pointer by Eaglestaff for WVU’s first lead of the second half at 42-41.

WVU enforced another run, holding ASU scoreless for three minutes and scoring eight unanswered points, for a 53-46 advantage. Arizona State had a five-point swing before Floyd responded with five of his own with a three and a layup, making it 58-51.

The Mountaineer lead continued to swell, as it reached double-digits after an and-one layup from Eaglestaff with the free throw at 64-54.

WVU closed the game out at 75-63, improving to 13-6 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12.

WVU basketball will play again at 2 p.m. on Saturday When the Mountaineers take on No. 1 Arizona in Tucson.
