Storylines to Keep an Eye On for WVU-Memphis in Frisco Bowl
Before West Virginia can fully hand the WVU football program back to Rich Rodriguez, they need to end the previous era the right way. And to do that properly, the Mountaineers will look to cap off the 2024 season with a bowl win.
Here are some of the storylines to keep an eye on during the Frisco Bowl against No. 25 Memphis.
Chad Scott as Interim HC for Bowl Game
Chad Scott was named West Virginiaโs interim head coach for the bowl soon after Neal Brown was fired. Scott, in his second year as the offensive coordinator, is in his sixth year on Neal Brownโs coaching staff at West Virginia. Scott was the co-offensive coordinator for his first three years, before serving as the run game coordinator in 2022 and has coached the running backs all five years.
Garrett Greene Wants WVU Fans to Remember Him in One Simple Way
No matter what happens from this point forward, Garrett Greene knows his career as a Mountaineer is over after WVUโs Frisco Bowl appearance. And knowing the finality of his journey is coming, Greene opened up about how he wants to be remembered by WVU fans.
Echoing a similar sentiment to what he said after his final home game, Greene just wants to be viewed as a competitor and someone who gave it his all. Greene said he knows he made some great plays and also had some really rough moments, too.
Garrett Greene Wants WVU Fans to Remember Him in One Simple Way
Simply put, Greene wants to be remembered as someone who โplayed his ass off for his teamโ above all else. He expanded even further on this hope of his during his postgame press conference following West Virginiaโs 31-21 win over UCF in their home finale.
โItโs been an honor of a lifetime to be able to represent this state, to be able to represent this wonderful university. I wouldnโt want it any other way,โ said Greene while reflecting back on his college career after the game.
Greene also admitted that he stayed on the field a bit longer than normal to soak up hearing WVU fans sing โTake Me Home, Country Roadsโ after a win at home one last time.
WVU HC Rich Rodriguez Admits Past Mistakes: โShouldโve Never Leftโ
There was one main point WVU head coach Rich Rodriguez wanted to hammer home during his introductory press conference โ itโs great to be home.
Rodriguez continuously kept bringing up his feelings about being back in West Virginia as the leader of the Mountaineers while talking to WVU fans, and even his detractors too, about what his second tenure will be like.
โIt is great to be home. Shouldโve never left,โ said Rodriguez, who also had to step back to stop himself from getting choked up.
Part of what got Rodriguez emotional was when he described the passion he still feels for his home state and school.
โI get to coach at the greatest university in this country. I get to live in the greatest state in the union. And more importantly, I get to be around the greatest people that you can be around,โ he said while holding back tears.
Rodriguez admitted that he always hoped he would someday get the opportunity to return to West Virginia to right the wrong of his 2007 exit and finish the unfinished business left from the way his first tenure ended.
