Versatile K/P/RB Luke Savino Signs with Mountaineers as PWO

A very versatile player is now officially a Mountaineer.

Luke Savino, a special teams/utility type athlete out of Somers High School in Somers, New York, posted images from his signing with West Virginia on March 10 during a ceremony at Somers High School. Savino has signed on as a PWO (preferred walk-on).

Savino committed to WVU on Dec. 16, posting a message to Mountaineer Nation on Twitter at the time. “Thank you Coach Brown, Coach Koonz and Coach Thompson for giving me the opportunity to play college football,” Savino said. “I am incredibly proud and excited to announce my commitment to West Virginia University to further my academic and athletic career,” is how he concluded his statement.

During the 2022 season, Savino converted three out of his four field goal attempts, including connecting on a 40-yarder. He also succeeded on 43 of 49 extra-points. Savino recorded a touchback 76% of the time on kickoffs and even received some action on offense, rushing for 1,230 yards on 152 carries.

It’s unlikely Savino will be needed as part of WVU’s successful ground game, especially with other star running backs joining him in the 2023 class, but having someone who can pretty much do it all is a nice bonus.
