Garrett Greene capped off his first NFL preseason by reaching the end zone for the first time as a pro on Saturday night.

As one last ditch effort to impress his coaches and further show proof he can successfully complete his position change, Greene caught a touchdown late in the Buccaneers’ final preseason game.

The former WVU quarterback managed to keep his feet in bounds while bringing in the catch.

Tampa Bay lost the game 23-19, but Greene caught three passes for 18 yards and the score in the game. Greene’s touchdown catch puts an exclamation point on a preseason full of highlights for the former Mountaineer.

Greene only played quarterback at WVU, but if heโ€™s going to have success in the NFL, itโ€™s going to be as a wide receiver. With no assurances, Greene decided to begin the process of changing positions ahead of the NFL Draft.

Garrett Greene Shows Comfort, Ability as WR for Buccaneers

The Tallahassee, Fla. native played a little bit of receiver at the beginning of his Mountaineer career just to get on the field, last doing so in 2022. He caught four passes in 2022 for 32 yards. He also carried the ball a handful of times as a skill player.

In 2023 and 2024, Greene was WVUโ€™s full-time starting quarterback, throwing for 2,706 yards and 31 touchdowns with 16 interceptions.

Greeneโ€™s greatest weapon, and the reason he could transition to receiver, has always been his legs. He topped 700 rushing yards in both of his seasons as WVUโ€™s starter, scoring 19 rushing touchdowns in that time.

In total, Greeneโ€™s career stats with the Mountaineers were 5,370 passing yards, 36 passing touchdowns, 19 interceptions, 2,145 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns.
