West Virginia legend Rod Thorn elected into Hall of Fame
Today is a great day to be a Mountaineer, especially for the legendary Rod Thorn. Thorn was notified today that he had been elected into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as an NBA Executive. Thorn was named the general manager of the Chicago Bulls in 1978 and was a part of drafting Michael Jordan in 1984, which was obviously a pretty good selection. Thorn’s greatest accomplishment may have been guiding the New Jersey Nets to their first ever NBA Finals appearance in 2002, he was also named NBA Executive of the Year that same season.
During his time at West Virginia, Thorn averaged 21.8 points per game, 11.1 rebounds per game and shot an outstanding 44% from the field. He was also a two time consensus All-American and the 1961-62 Southern Conference Player of the Year. Thorn was drafted 2nd overall in the 1963 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards formally known as the Baltimore Bullets.
We congratulate Rod on his induction and thank him for representing West Virginia and West Virginia basketball at the highest level, he will become the 2nd Mountaineer named to the Hall of Fame joining “The Logo” Jerry West.
