The National Invitation Tournament announced their field on Sunday night, with West Virginia missing the cut. After the report that the Mountaineers will decline an invite to the CBI Tournament, this is setting up the end of the season for WVU.

The NIT includes 32 teams, preferably the best teams that missed out on the NCAA Tournament. The NIT Tournament gives an automatic bid to the schools that won their regular season championships but didn’t make it to March Madness. For example, since Iona won the MAAC Regular Season Title, but not the conference tournament, they will have an automatic spot in the NIT. With a 32-team field, this limits the opportunity for Power-5 schools that struggled this season.

Oklahoma will represent the Big 12 in the NIT Tournament as the No. 1 seed in the bottom left region. The Sooners were left on the first four teams out of the NCAA Tournament. In Porter Moser’s first season in Norman, the Sooners finished with an 18-15 record. Oklahoma had a great week in Kansas City, defeating Baylor and almost upsetting Texas Tech.

West Virginia sits with a 16-17 record, finishing last in the Big 12. This could be the first time since 2013 that WVU does not participate in any form of a postseason tournament.
