Mountaineers in the Pros
Joe Mazzulla Adds New Major Award to NBA Coaching Resume
Having already won an NBA championship, Joe Mazzulla can now add another major accomplishment to his coaching resume.
Mazzulla was named the NBA’s Coach of the Year on Tuesday. He was honored for leading the Boston Celtics to 56 wins and the Eastern Conference’s No. 2 seed despite being without Jayson Tatum throughout most of the season.
The Celtics did suffer a first round upset at the hands of the Philadelphia 76ers, but the Coach of the Year only recognizes the regular seas, so that was not factored into the award.
Mazzulla has 238 wins and has won .726% of his games in four seasons at the helm of the Celtics.
The former Mountaineer guard was named an interim head coach on Sept. 22, 2022 after Ime Udoka was suspended for the entire season for violating team policies. Mazzulla was named head coach on Feb. 16, 2023 after leading the Celtics to a 42-17 record at the NBA All-Star Break that season.
Mazzulla played at WVU from 2006-2011, averaging 4.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. He was a part of WVU’s run to the Final Four in 2010, where he averaged 2.7 points per game.
