WVSN Notebook 3/23/24: WVU Baseball Gets Revenge, Wins Series Over Oklahoma
The West Virginia Sports Now Daily Notebook is a daily recap of news concerning West Virginia University Athletics.
Update (11:00 PM) –
The Mountaineers took the game and the series in the nightcap of their doubleheader with Oklahoma behind a smattering of home runs.
WVU Baseball didn’t waste any time getting started in Game 2, leaping out to a 6-0 lead after two innings thanks to home runs from Ben Lumsden, Grant Hussey, Michael Perazza and Spencer Barnett.
Aaron Jamison added a two-run homer in the sixth—as all of the Mountaineers’ runs came via homer—on the way to the 8-3 victory.
David Hagaman piggy-backed off of starter Tyler Switalski, adding 6.2 innings in relief to earn the win and striking out ten batters.
Update (6:50 PM) –
WVU Baseball claimed the first game of their doubleheader with the Oklahoma Sooners 9-5, tying the series at one game apiece behind left-handed Derek Clark’s complete game.
The wheels started to fall off late for Clark, as he allowed three runs in the ninth inning—albeit with the game pretty much out of hand—but he managed to hang on and complete the 127 pitch feat. Clark also picked off an otherworldly three base runners and made an incredible sliding stop on a bunt attempt.
One day after suffering their first nine-inning no-hitter in nearly a century, every Mountaineer in the lineup recorded at least one hit. West Virginia’s offense largely succeeded through small ball, although infielder Reed Chumley managed to hit his fifth homer of the year.
