WVU Football Blaine Stewart

The American Football Coaches Association says the WVU football staff has two of the top young coaches in the country.

Wide receivers coach Bilal Marshall and tight ends coach Blaine Stewart were both named to the 2024 AFCA 35 Coaches Under 35 Class.

Marshall, 29, who cut his coaching teeth at West Virginia as a graduate assistant from 2020-21, returned to Morgantown before the 2023 season when he was hired to be the program’s new wide receivers coach. He spent the 2022 season at VMI.

Marshall’s Florida roots and status as a former player has already paid dividends for West Virginia recruiting wise. His coaching style of blending an ability to connect with the players but offer tough love when necessary is already evident as well. He was recognized as one of 247 Sports’ top assistant coaches under 30 a few months ago.

As for Stewart, he was brought back to Morgantown after spending several years working with the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers. Stewart is the son of the late former WVU head coach Bill Stewart.

At the time of his hire, West Virginia head coach Neal Brown made it clear Stewart did not get the job because of his last name. Players often talk about Stewart being able to leverage what he learned in the NFL to help them with their games.
