WVU Basketball Casts Net Towards Washington Transfer Guard

Most of Ross Hodge’s portal work for WVU basketball during his final week coaching North Texas focusing on mid-major transfers, but it now appears he’s casting his net towards players already at the Power Four level.

On Sunday, Joe Tipton of On3 Sports reported West Virginia is one of the latest programs to reach out to Washington transfer guard Mekhi Mason. Still available after entering the portal on March 31, Mason has also heard from at least eight other schools recently.

Tipton also reports BYU, Cincinnati, Clemson, Maryland, Penn State, Texas, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest have expressed interest in Mason.

Listed at 6-foot-5, Mason spent the 2024-25 season with Washington after playing at Rice the prior two years. He averaged 9.9 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists with the Huskies. Mason, a career 41.3% shooter, enjoyed his best season came in 2023-24 when he averaged 14.0 points in 32 games with Rice.
