WVU Basketball Survives Campbell Thanks to Big Night From Honor Huff
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU basketball team held off the Campbell Camels 73-65 Thursday as senior guard Honor Huff surpassed 1,500 career points.
WVU went with the same lineup as the opening game against Mount St. Mary’s – senior guard Jasper Floyd, Huff, senior guard Treysen Eaglestaff, senior forward Brenen Lorient and senior center Harlan Obioha.
The Mountaineers attacked the rim early, jumping out to an 8-0 lead. The run included Eaglestaff’s first field goal of the year.
Campbell responded with four straight points from sophomore forward Dovydas Butka. Freshman forward DJ Thomas added a three-point shot at the 15:39 mark for an 11-4 WVU lead.
Huff brought the Hope Coliseum crowd to its feet with an and-one three-pointer. He made the free throw for a 15-6 WVU lead.
Eaglestaff cashed in from three for the first time this year at the 10:01 mark in the first half. He connected again five minutes later to move to double-digit scoring with 10 points. The score read 25-17.
The Mountaineer lead reached double digits at 29-19 at the 2:27 mark off of two free throws from Lorient.
Huff added another three before halftime as WVU took a 33-25 lead to the locker rooms.
Campbell opened the second half with four straight points and eventually came within one point of tying the game at 37-36. However, an and-one score from Obioha put WVU back up by four.
A layup by Thomas and two free throws made the score 44-38 heading into the 12-minute media timeout.
Campbell brought the score within two with four straight free throws, but Thomas extended the lead for WVU with a second-chance inside score. WVU led 50-46 with 8:11 remaining.
Huff drilled a fading corner three at the 2:17 mark for a 64-56 lead. After Campbell made another attempt at closing the gap, Lorient threw down a right-handed dunk for a 66-60 advantage.
WVU finished with five double-digit scorers as Huff had 23, Eaglestaff, Obioha and Lorient all had 12 and Thomas finished with 10.
WVU will take the court again at 3 p.m. Sunday when it hosts Lehigh at the Hope Coliseum.
