MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – On a beautiful fall day set aside to honor the success of the past, WVU tried to build their first win streak of the season against Colorado.

Both teams traded punches, mostly thrown by their defenses, throughout the first 10 minutes of the game. But then, momentum swung one way and stayed there. That was the direction of the Mountaineers.

Right after Scotty Fox connected with Jeff Weimer to bring the offense to the red zone, a Cycir Bowers fumble handed the ball to the Buffaloes. However, a stop by the defense then led the first points of the game – a safety in favor of WVU off a fumbled punt. And for a score rarely ever on any football scoreboard anywhere, West Virginia was up 2-0 with 4:35 remaining in the opening quarter.

Fox then made sure WVU took full advantage on the ensuing possession, guiding the offense to an 11-play, 75-yard touchdown. Linebacker Curtis Jones Jr. punched in the score, making the most of his rare opportunity on the other side of the ball.

Later in the second quarter, Fox connected with running back Diorre Hubbard on a 69-yard bomb that set up another Mountaineer touchdown. Just before halftime, WVU only produced 10 more total yards on offense (177-167 at the time), yet held what seemed like an imposing 16-3 advantage.

Colorado would finally find pay dirt themselves, as freshman quarterback Julian Lewis threw a nine-yard pass to finish a six-play, 77-yard drive with a touchdown. A missed extra point later and the score read 16-9.

Wasting no time to try to answer in the final second of the half, a couple big plays, including an eight-yard keeper up the middle by Fox, allowed Kade Hensley to add three points with a 41-yard field goal, sending both teams into the locker room with the score 19-9.

The tide started to turn once the second half got underway. Fox threw two picks on back-to-back possessions, the second of which Colorado took advantage of with a touchdown.

The Buffaloes tacked on three more points with a field goal, cutting their deficit to 22-19 early in the fourth quarter.

Sick of the back and forth swings of momentum, West Virginia hammered the ball into the end zone on last time – the first of the second half. Jones kept the series alive near the goal line and then broke through for his second touchdown, making the score 29-19 with 4:15 left.

The collective effort of mostly Fox, Hubbard, Bowers and Jones accumulated 167 rushing yards in the game.

An afternoon that started by celebrating Steve Slaton, an all-time great Mountaineer, advanced to the evening on a celebratory note as well. The 29-22 win earned the 2025 Mountaineers their first win streak of the season, moving WVU’s record to 4-6 (2-5, Big 12). Up next is their last road trip of the season, a long distance journey to meet Arizona State.
