The 2024 season might be one WVU fans want to forget, but the Mountaineers were part of memorable moments and games nonetheless. In fact, a national writer for ESPN feels West Virginia experienced two of the top games of the year.

Despite WVU being on the losing end of both big games, ESPN’s Bill Connelly placed the Backyard Brawl against Pitt and the Frisco Bowl against Memphis in his top 100.

Backyard Brawl at No. 30

In what was likely the beginning of the end for Neal Brown, West Virginia squandered a 10-point lead in the final minutes of the 2024 Brawl. WVU ended up losing 38-34 in Pittsburgh. Blowing a game to a rival like Pitt, especially after opening the season with so much hype proved to be the last straw for many fans and that loss triggered a season full of disappointment and drama for Brown before he was eventually fired at the conclusion of the regular season on Dec. 1.

The loss dropped Brown to 1-2 vs. Pitt and creates pressure on the 2025 team to even up the series before it goes on a brief hiatus.

Frisco Bowl at No. 97

With the Brown era officially over and Rich Rodriguez back in the fold for a second tenure, West Virginia attempted to cap of a tough season with a trophy. But instead, WVU suffered a 42-37 loss to Memphis, culminating in finishing the season with a losing record.

Chaotic Frisco Bowl Results in Losing Season for West Virginia

Despite the loss, Garrett Greene did have one of his best performances in his last game as a Mountaineer and a late comeback attempt did make the game interesting at the end.

Greene earned a grade of 90.8 for his efforts in West Virginiaโ€™s Frisco Bowl loss to Memphis. He finished the Frisco Bowl with 328 yards passing and 95 on the ground. He scored three total touchdowns and completed 29-of-40 passes, which was good for 73%.

While being in exciting games is nice, the goal for Rodriguez in 2025 is to get WVU to start winning more of them again.
