West Virginia is paired with one of the current Pac-12 schools in a familiar bowl game in Brett McMurphy’s latest bowl projections again. According to McMurphy of the Action Network, WVU will face Washington State in the Liberty Bowl.

McMurphy previously had WVU playing Oregon State in the Independence Bowl after Week 6, but has now swapped one Pac-12 team for another and changed the game following West Virginia’s 38-14 win over Oklahoma State. One of Neal Brown’s two bowl wins at WVU came in the Liberty Bowl in 2020.

The Mountaineers are now 3-2 overall and need only three more victories to clinch the program’s 41 bowl appearance all-time. But more importantly, and why most WVU fans aren’t excited about seeing these recent bowl projections, West Virginia is in the thick of the Big 12 race and a conference title would earn them an automatic spot in the College Football Playoff. WVU did jump way up on the ESPN FPI this week.

Going back to McMurphy’s prediction, Washington State is 4-1 and coming off their bye week. The Cougars are scheduled to face Fresno State next.

As for West Virginia, they have a home showdown with Iowa State on deck this weekend. The Mountaineers and Cyclones are set to kickoff at 8 pm ET on Saturday. WVU will debut their new Coal Rush uniform under the Milan Puskar Stadium lights.

The Saturday night atmosphere will also serve as the backdrop to Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht’s father Anthony being honored. Former Mountaineer Anthony Becht was unable to attend his induction into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame and will be honored when his son is in town.
