WVU Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2023 Honored During Football Game

The focus is on both the present and past of WVU sports on this Saturday game day in Morgantown. In the midst of West Virginia’s game against Texas Tech, the 2023 WVU Sports Hall of Fame class was honored on the field.

This capped off a day of celebrating former Mountaineer greats. Headliner Bruce Irvin, broadcaster Jay Jacobs and the others were officially inducted Saturday afternoon before kickoff.

Six Mountaineers will forever be immortalized as West Virginia legends. Trevor Gathman (rifle), Bruce Irvin (football), TeShawne Jackson (gymnastics), Jay Jacobs (broadcaster), Buddy Quertinmont (men’s basketball) and Renee Riccio (women’s swimming & diving) make up the 2023 class of WVU Sports Hall of Fame

The 2023 class marks the 33rd class in school history and will bring the total number of inductees to 229. WVU football great Bruce Irvin is the headliner of this year’s class.

Irvin, the headliner of the class, announced his inclusion a month before the school released the names. At WVU, Irvin recorded 45 tackles and 22.5 sacks in two seasons, playing a key role on West Virginia’s Orange Bowl winning team.

Once turning pro, Irvin was drafted with the 15th overall in the 2012 NFL Draft by Seattle. He has since also played for the Raiders, Falcons, Panthers and Bears, totaling 340 tackles and 54 sacks. Irvin reached two Super Bowls, winning XLVIIII with the Seahawks.

Irvin earned his degree from West Virginia University in 2018.

As for the rest of the class, Gathman led the Mountaineers to three national championships in rifle. He became a seven-time All-American from 1993-96 and claimed several other international honors throughout his career as well.

Jackson owns the most perfect-10 scores in WVU gymnastics history. He helped West Virginia advance to the NCAA Championships as a freshman in 2000.

After time as an athlete at Morgantown High School and then WVU, Jacobs has been a voice of the Mountaineers on broadcast since starting at Mountaineer Sports Network (MSN) in 1977. He’s been on-air for some of the most memorable moments in WVU basketball history.

The late Quertinmont was part of three men’s basketball teams to win Southern Conference titles and make two NCAA Tournament appearances during his career from 1961-65.

Riccio was a three-time All-American in swimming & diving during her time at WVU from 1989-93.
