WVU Women's Basketball HC Mark Kellogg

WVU women’s basketball head coach Mark Kellogg opened his postgame press conference saying his team didn’t perform up its standard, both in how they played and how they behaved. Kellogg was expressing disappointment in his team’s performance despite their 78-47 win and was also referring to the actions of one of his players.

Junior guard Sydney Shaw was ejected in the third quarter for throwing a punch. Shaw received a technical foul for her third period punch, which followed a foul from Bowling Green’s Taya Ellis.

“Probably a little disappointed for a lot of reasons. I think there’s a standard that we expect to behave and act, and then play as well. And I don’t think we met either of those tonight,” said Kellogg.

At the time of his press conference, Kellogg said he hadn’t talked with Shaw yet and hadn’t seen ant of the replays, but will obviously address the incident with her.

“That’s not us. We can’t do that. We can’t react that way. She can’t do that. She has to be better than that. That’s not what we’re about. That’s really disappointing.”

In addition to any disciplinary measure Kellogg wants to administer, it’s also likely the Big 12 may look into the incident as well.

All in all, it sounds as if the entire game was just a major disappointment for Kellogg. Simply winning isn’t enough for a team with big goals and letting frustration boil over can spell disaster for tougher games, especially in conference play.

WVU Women’s Basketball will conclude this five game homestand against Lafayette at 7pm on Friday, November 22. Should Shaw face further discipline, missing that game wouldn’t be the end of the world for the Mountaineers.
