WVU Women’s Basketball continued their undefeated run to start the season on Sunday, obliterating the Delaware State Hornets 107-43, the sixth-highest scoring output in Mountaineers history.

Junior guard JJ Quinerly led the onslaught with 25 points, adding 12 assists, eight rebounds and seven steals on the way to a whopping plus/minus of 58 in 26 minutes.

The Hornets (2-7) were simply outmatched in every facet of the game by a 9-0 Mountaineers team almost certain to be ranked in the Top 25 tomorrow.  West Virginia forced 25 turnovers in the contest—leading to 37 points—the eighth time in nine games they created more than 20.

Delaware State took a 3-2 lead two minutes into the contest, and West Virginia reacted with a vengeance.

Mountaineers Start the Onslaught

The Mountaineers responded with a second-chance layup from Kyah Watson, and from there it was off to the races. That sparked a 23-0 run, and the Mountaineers forcing 12 turnovers throughout the frame as they built a commanding 37-7 lead.

Scoring slowed before the half as head coach Mark Kellogg worked his bench players into the game early, but the Mountaineers still led 55-11 heading into the break.

With potential history on the line—Quinerly flirting with a quadruple-double, for instance—the Mountaineers kept their foot on the gas for much of the second half despite the already-lopsided affair. Quinerly added a rebound and two assists in the fourth quarter, inching closer to that lofty category, but eventually earned a well-deserved substitution midway through the frame.

The Mountaineers eased  their defensive pressure as the game continued, allowing 11 and 19 points per period. They limited the Hornets to seven and six points, respectively, in the opening frames.

WVU Women’s Basketball moves to 9-0 on the season. They’ll take the court next against Wright State at 10 am on Monday, December 18.
