WVU WR Cam Vaughn Breaks Out in Mountaineer Debut
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU offense had nearly 400 yards on the ground in their 45-3 win over Robert Morris on Saturday. However, redshirt sophomore wide receiver Cam Vaughn demanded attention through the air as well in his Mountaineer debut.
Vaughn, who was named to the Biletnikoff Award Preseason Watch List, had seven catches on eight targets for 127 yards and one touchdown, all team highs. His touchdown catch came on a 46-yard deep shot from redshirt junior quarterback Nicco Marchiol.

Vaughn highlighted his connection with Marchiol in the postgame press conference.
“As you can see. There’s a lot of potential there,” Vaughn said. “I mean, it’s just a big trust factor, you know, just executing, I would say.”
Marchiol mentioned his relationship with Vaughn as well, saying it has been developing since Vaughn first arrived to WVU.
This connection, it’s not something that just happened this morning,” Marchiol said. “It’s been the day he got on campus. It’s the things we do when no one’s looking, it’s the extra hours you put in, and things like this just build trust. And just having a connection with a guy like that is so huge.”
Vaughn came to Morgantown after playing for Rich Rodriguez for two seasons at Jacksonville State. He had 48 catches for 803 yards and five e touchdowns last year as a redshirt freshman.
Rodriguez called Vaughn one of the “most explosive” players in the country and was happy to give him a chance to show it on his deep catch.
“He’s obviously a great athlete. And he’s a great competitor. Cam really loves to compete. He always feels he can get it open and get by somebody,” Rodriguez said. “And I’m glad we took a deep shot… He ran a great route and Nico made a great throw. So, you know, Cam’s one of the most explosive guys, I think, in the country. You know, I’m glad he got some plays today.”
As he attempts to lead a major conference, Vaughn emphasized mental toughness and persistence.
“I will say a person coming from a G5 school trying to put an exclamation point in the Big 12, I would say just keep going fight the mental illness that you go through because you go through them every day just keep your head up and keep pushing,” Vaughn said.
