5 New Big 12 Teams Now Longest Distance in Conference for WVU

With the Big 12 adding Arizona, Arizona State and Utah this week, five of the eight transitioning new teams are the longest distance from WVU.

Arizona State, Arizona, BYU, Utah and Colorado are all new to the Big 12 in 2023 and 2024. BYU joined the conference officially in July while the Pac-12 additions join summer 2024. Lubbock, Texas, the home of Texas Tech, was the longest distance before the new additions. Now Lubbock is sixth-furthest on the list.

For the first time in their Big 12 tenure, West Virginia will have an opponent’s campus less than 800 miles away with Cincinnati. Like BYU, Cincinnati officially joined the conference in July.

Distance from Morgantown to Big 12 towns:

1. Tempe (ASU) – 2,069 mi.
2. Tucson (UA) – 2,044 mi.
3. Provo (BYU) – 1,928 mi.
4. Salt Lake City (UT) – 1,905 mi.
5. Boulder (CU) – 1,481 mi.
6. Lubbock (TTU) – 1,466 mi.
7. Houston (UH) – 1,347 mi.
8. Waco (BU) – 1,302 mi.
9. Fort Worth (TCU) – 1,244 mi.
10. Stillwater (OSU) – 1,079 mi.
11. Manhattan (KSU) – 980 mi.
12. Orlando (UCF) – 903 mi.
13. Lawrence (KU) – 900 mi.
14. Ames (ISU) – 869 mi.
15. Cincinnati (UC) – 308 mi.

For the 2023-24 academic year, the Big 12 will jump from 10 teams to 14. Oklahoma and Texas will spend their final year in the Big 12 before departing for the SEC in 2024. BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston join the conference for the first time in 2023 and Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah depart the Pac-12 for the Big 12 in 2024.

Starting in the 2024-25 season the Big 12 will go to 16 teams and will consist of Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Colorado, Iowa State, Houston, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, Utah and West Virginia.
