Zach Frazier Named to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

Offensive lineman Zach Frazier keeps picking up preseason praise as he found himself on another watch list, this time for the Wuerffel Trophy.

Unlike the others, which are purely performance based, the Wuerffel Trophy is “presented to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership achievement on and off the field.”

The award is named for Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 starting quarterback for the national title winning Florida Gators. He works at the non-profit Desire Street Ministries to help spread spiritual and community development in souther communities.

Most notably they helped New Orleans in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Wuerffel became the organizations executive director during that period.

Wuerffel was drafted by the Saints in the fourth round of the 1997 draft and played with them for three seasons from 1997-99.

Last year’s winner was Stanford University quarterback Isaiah Sanders, who is an United States Air Force officer that founded the “Adopt-a-Cardinal” which “program pairs a football player or position group with a classroom of grade school students to regularly encourage them, read to them, to assist them with their homework and to help them in any way possible.”

Frazier has been picking up many preseason accolades including numerous All-Conference nods and a few All-American ones. He’s also been named to the Rimington Award Watch List, which goes to the best center in college football.
